If this is your first time having blood drawn, it is completely natural to feel nervous. Millions of people across the UK have blood tests every year — and the vast majority find the experience far easier than they expected. At Royal Saafi Healthcare, our job is to make the process as smooth, comfortable, and stress-free as possible. Here is everything you need to know, from the moment you book to the moment you receive your results.

Before Your Appointment — Preparation

Do You Need to Fast?

This depends entirely on which tests have been ordered. For many routine tests — such as a full blood count or thyroid function — you do not need to fast at all. However, certain tests do require fasting beforehand:

  • Fasting glucose and diabetes tests — typically require 8–10 hours without food
  • Cholesterol and lipid panels — usually require a 9–12 hour fast
  • Iron studies — best done fasting for most accurate results
  • Some liver function tests — may require fasting

When you book with Royal Saafi, we will always tell you clearly whether fasting is required for your specific tests. When in doubt, drink water — staying well hydrated makes the blood draw easier and helps us find your vein quickly.

💧 Top Tip: Drink at least 500ml of water in the hour before your appointment, even if you are fasting from food. Hydration plumps the veins and makes the needle insertion quicker and less uncomfortable.

What to Wear

Wear a top or shirt with sleeves that roll up easily past your elbow. Tight or long-sleeved clothing can make accessing your arm more difficult. If you are having a home visit, simply wear comfortable clothing you can roll up easily.

Medications

Unless your GP or consultant has specifically told you to stop a medication before your blood test, continue taking all your regular medications as normal. Let your phlebotomist know what you are taking — some medications can affect certain test results, and this information will be noted alongside your sample.

Arriving at the Clinic

When you arrive at Royal Saafi Healthcare, you will be welcomed by our reception team and asked to confirm your details. If you have a test request form from your GP, bring it with you. If you have booked directly with us, we will already have your test details on file.

You may be asked to complete a brief intake form confirming any relevant medical information such as current medications, recent illnesses, or allergies. This takes no more than two to three minutes.

The Blood Draw — Step by Step

The actual blood draw typically takes between three and eight minutes from the moment you sit down. Here is exactly what happens:

  1. You sit comfortably in a reclining chair with your arm supported on a padded rest.
  2. Your phlebotomist selects the site — usually the inside of your elbow (antecubital fossa), where veins tend to be largest and most accessible.
  3. A tourniquet is applied briefly above the site to make the vein more visible and easier to access.
  4. The skin is cleaned with an alcohol swab and allowed to dry for a few seconds.
  5. The needle is inserted — you will feel a brief, sharp sting lasting less than a second. Most patients describe it as a small pinch.
  6. Blood is collected into one or more small tubes, depending on which tests you are having. This takes one to three minutes.
  7. The needle is removed, and a small cotton pad or bandage is pressed to the site for a minute or two to stop any bleeding.
  8. You are done. Most patients are free to leave immediately.

⚠ If You Feel Faint: Tell your phlebotomist before the procedure if you have felt faint during blood tests in the past. We can have you lie down rather than sit, which significantly reduces the risk of vasovagal response. Never be embarrassed to mention it — it is extremely common and easily managed.

Will It Hurt?

Most patients experience a brief, sharp sting as the needle enters the skin — comparable to a small injection. After that initial moment, the majority of people feel minimal discomfort. The skill of your phlebotomist plays a significant role: at Royal Saafi, our team are highly trained and experienced in making the insertion as smooth and pain-free as possible. Modern, ultra-fine needles have also dramatically reduced discomfort compared to older techniques.

After the Blood Draw

Immediately Afterwards

You can return to normal activities straight away in most cases. A few simple tips:

  • Keep gentle pressure on the site for 2–3 minutes to prevent bruising
  • Avoid heavy lifting with the arm used for at least 30 minutes
  • If you fasted, have something to eat and drink as soon as you like
  • A small bruise at the site is normal and will fade within a few days

When Will You Get Your Results?

24hMost Routine Tests
48hStandard Panels
5–7dSpecialist Tests

Royal Saafi delivers most routine blood test results within 24–48 hours. Your results are sent securely to your email or made available via our patient portal, along with a clear, plain-English explanation of each value. For complex or specialist tests, we will advise you of the expected turnaround time when you book.

Understanding Your Results

Every result we send includes reference ranges — the normal values for each marker — so you can see at a glance whether your result falls within the expected range. We also include brief explanations of what each value means. If any result falls significantly outside the normal range, our clinical team will contact you directly to discuss next steps and, where appropriate, recommend follow-up with your GP or a specialist.

📋 Remember: A result outside the reference range does not automatically mean something is seriously wrong. Reference ranges are statistical averages. Always discuss any concerns with a qualified healthcare professional who can put your results in the context of your full medical history.

Tips for a Smooth Experience

  • Book an early morning appointment if fasting is required — it is easier to fast overnight
  • Bring a list of your current medications
  • Wear comfortable, loose clothing
  • Let your phlebotomist know about any previous fainting episodes or difficult veins
  • Stay calm — deep, slow breathing before and during the draw genuinely helps
  • Have a small snack and drink ready to have immediately after if you are fasting
