Preventive healthcare is one of the most powerful investments you can make in your long-term wellbeing. Many serious conditions — including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, thyroid disorders, and anaemia — develop silently for years before producing noticeable symptoms. Annual blood testing allows you and your healthcare team to catch these changes early, when treatment is most effective and outcomes are best.

At Royal Saafi Healthcare, we recommend that all healthy adults arrange a core blood panel at least once a year. Here are the ten tests we consider most important — and why each one matters.

1. Full Blood Count (FBC)

The full blood count is the cornerstone of any health screen. It measures the three main types of blood cells: red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. An FBC can reveal anaemia, infection, inflammation, clotting problems, and in some cases, early indicators of blood cancers such as leukaemia. It is quick, inexpensive, and provides an enormous amount of clinical information in a single test.

2. Fasting Glucose & HbA1c (Diabetes Screen)

Type 2 diabetes is one of the most prevalent and preventable chronic diseases in the UK. A fasting glucose test measures your blood sugar after an overnight fast, while HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar levels over the past 2–3 months. Together, these two markers give a comprehensive picture of your glucose metabolism. Pre-diabetes — a reversible state — can be identified years before full diabetes develops, giving you the opportunity to reverse it through lifestyle changes.

🩸 Fasting Required: Both fasting glucose and optimal HbA1c results require an 8–10 hour fast. Plan your appointment for first thing in the morning.

3. Lipid Profile (Cholesterol Panel)

Your lipid profile measures total cholesterol, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, HDL ("good") cholesterol, and triglycerides. Elevated LDL and triglycerides, particularly in combination with low HDL, significantly increase cardiovascular risk. High cholesterol produces absolutely no symptoms — making annual testing the only reliable way to detect it. This test also requires a 9–12 hour fast for the most accurate results.

4. Thyroid Function Test (TFT)

The thyroid gland controls metabolism, energy, mood, weight, and dozens of other vital functions. Thyroid disorders — both underactive (hypothyroidism) and overactive (hyperthyroidism) — are among the most common hormonal conditions in the UK, affecting approximately 1 in 20 people. Symptoms are often vague and easily attributed to stress or aging. A simple TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone) test, often combined with T3 and T4, can identify thyroid dysfunction before it significantly impacts your health.

5. Liver Function Tests (LFTs)

Your liver performs over 500 essential functions. Liver function tests measure enzymes and proteins including ALT, AST, ALP, and bilirubin to assess how well your liver is working. Elevated values can indicate fatty liver disease, alcohol-related damage, medication side effects, or early liver inflammation. With fatty liver disease now affecting an estimated 1 in 3 UK adults, this panel is increasingly important for everyone — not just those who drink alcohol.

6. Kidney Function (Urea & Electrolytes)

The kidneys filter waste products from the blood and regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. Kidney function tests measure creatinine, urea, eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate), and electrolytes such as sodium and potassium. Early chronic kidney disease (CKD) produces no symptoms at all — annual testing is the only way to catch declining kidney function before it progresses to a point requiring intervention.

7. Iron Studies & Ferritin

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency worldwide. It causes fatigue, brain fog, hair loss, breathlessness, and reduced physical performance — symptoms that are easily dismissed as stress or poor sleep. Ferritin (stored iron) is often depleted long before haemoglobin drops enough to cause clinical anaemia. Annual testing of ferritin, serum iron, and transferrin saturation can identify deficiency in its earliest stages, allowing simple supplementation to restore levels before more serious consequences develop.

8. Vitamin D

The UK's climate means that Vitamin D deficiency is extraordinarily common — particularly during autumn and winter months. Vitamin D plays critical roles in bone health, immune function, mood regulation, cardiovascular health, and muscle strength. Studies suggest that up to 40% of UK adults have insufficient Vitamin D levels. A simple blood test reveals your status, and supplementation is safe, inexpensive, and highly effective when guided by actual measured levels.

9. Vitamin B12 & Folate

Both B12 and folate are essential for nerve function, DNA synthesis, and the production of healthy red blood cells. Deficiency can cause neurological symptoms including numbness, memory problems, and in severe cases, irreversible nerve damage. Vegans and vegetarians are at particular risk for B12 deficiency, as it is found almost exclusively in animal products. Anyone over 50, with gut absorption issues, or taking metformin (a common diabetes medication) should also test regularly.

10. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) — Inflammation Marker

CRP is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation anywhere in the body. Chronically elevated CRP — even at low levels — is an independent risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and all-cause mortality. High-sensitivity CRP (hsCRP) is particularly useful for cardiovascular risk assessment when combined with a lipid profile. It can also flag hidden infections, autoimmune conditions, and inflammatory disorders that might otherwise go undetected.

Who Should Test More Frequently?

Certain groups benefit from more frequent testing — every 3–6 months rather than annually:

  • People with diagnosed diabetes, pre-diabetes, or high cholesterol
  • Those on long-term medications that affect the liver, kidneys, or blood
  • Women who are pregnant or planning pregnancy
  • Athletes undergoing intensive training
  • Adults over 60
  • Anyone with a strong family history of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, or autoimmune conditions

How to Get Started

You do not need a GP referral to access any of these tests through Royal Saafi Healthcare. Contact us directly to discuss which package is right for you, and we will arrange an appointment at our clinic — or send a phlebotomist to your home — at a time that suits you. Results are delivered securely and promptly, with expert guidance on what they mean and what steps to take next.

Your health is your most valuable asset. Annual blood testing is one of the simplest, most cost-effective ways to protect it.
